It’s not long since we welcomed 350 product people to the REP in Birmingham for the 8th edition of Canvas Conference, but our planning for 2020 started well before that. We’re really excited to launch a new vision for Canvas, as well as announcing the return of our one-day product conference in Birmingham on the 8 October 2020.
So, Canvas. What's the deal?
Unlike many other conferences and events which are glorified sales pitches and corporate-ly stuffy, Canvas is delivered by a community of makers, for makers.
For 8 years, we’ve brought some of the biggest brands and brightest minds from the world of product to Birmingham to deliver honest, inspirational talks that encourage and energise people who design, make and deliver digital products and experiences.
Our speakers share with us their successes, their failures, the lessons learned, and the journey they have been on. There’s no high level overviews or brand evangelists — it’s actionable insights from real people doing the hard work, on the front lines of designing, building and managing digital products and customer experiences.
A blockbuster Canvas Conference 2020
For the first time, Canvas will be hosted at Cineworld Birmingham on Thursday, 8 October 2020. We’ve got exclusive access for the entire day, taking the conference experience to the next level for our speakers, attendees and sponsors alike.
Our main talks will be in the 350 capacity IMAX cinema, with huge comfy seats that you can sit for hours in, more legroom than business class, an exceptional integrated sound system, and a completely uninterrupted view of the screen and speaker from every seat. Add to that breakout sessions in secondary screens, multiple networking locations, and even branded popcorn, and we now have the venue to elevate Canvas Conference to become the blockbuster event that we know it can be…???
As well as amazing facilities, the cinema is ideally situated in the heart of the city, easily accessible for both locals and those coming from further afield.

We’re delighted to announce our first three inspirational speakers from the world of product, joining us to share their insider stories.
Virgil Calejesan, UX Researcher at SpaceX
Virgil will be discussing the commonalities of his journey so far — curiosity and a desire to serve. And there may or may not be footage of a rocket launch shown in all it’s glory in IMAX and surround sound…
Genevieve Kangurs, Head of Digital Experience and Adoption at TSB
Genevieve will talk about dealing with a crisis (you can guess what…), how you get ahead of an issue, and how you support each other through a s*** situation!
Matt Davey, Chief Operations Optimist at 1Password
Designing by privacy limits the interactions you can have with your customers, but Matt will talk to us about how 1Password also design for trust.
We’re announcing our next speakers on the 1st April, so watch this space!
This year, to bring everything together, we’re introducing a theme for the conference. For 2020, we’re focusing on ethical design — the products we make, how we make them, and how we use them.
In a world where it’s never been easier to design and launch digital products, how can we do so with the intent to do good and a focus on making people’s lives better? Our speakers will talk about ethical design and how it affects their product design and development — expect to hear about accessibility, sustainability, and what “good” design really means.
